Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students from urban Los Angeles are typical kids who love learning and having fun! They miss being at school physically with their friends and teachers, but they still come onto zoom every morning ready to learn! You can hear their laughter and the mix of English and Spanish through our zoom calls! They are excited to use their new student devices they recently got to learn from home. These kids enjoy reading comics, doodling, playing video games with each other during lunch, making videos of themselves, and just simply being with their friends!
My Project
My students were so excited when they first learned about Dash robots last school year during quarantine. Because my students will be returning to school this year in-person, I plan to work more in-depth instructing computer thinking skills I learned at the Pathfinders Summer Insitute by coding Dash robots!
Students will learn how to communicate and collaborate with peers, decompose problems, use logic to evaluate solutions and create algorithms to problem solve as they work in teams to program Dash robots.
I am also planning to run an after school programming club using Dash so students from other classes can learn to program! My other plan is to teach my little programmers to train other students how to code so the spririt of collaboration and learning can be sustainable, and students learn to depend more on each other and less on me. By teaching others to code, my students are reinforcing their own learning. They are rehearsing the Inernational Society for Technology Education (ISTE) standards. Plus, using Dash robots will prove to be a great way to support the socialization of kids who have not seen each other live in over a year!
