"Sometimes you read a book so special that you want to carry it around with you for months after you've finished just to stay near it." (Markus Zusak)
Our freshman students need to read a book this special, a book that will stay with them. That book is The Book Thief.
This project focuses on the incoming Freshman Class of 2013-14.
These are students taking Standard English I and tend to be reluctant readers. We are a small, rural high school in middle Tennessee serving approximately 1000 students in grades 9-12 each year.
My Project
Each student in these classes will be provided a copy of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. The book will serve as the anchor title for a unit of study examining the resilience of the human spirit in the face of great terror and loss, the heroism of everyday people, and our continuing struggle to fight inhumanity in the world. We will layer our novel study with primary source accounts from Holocaust survivors, informational text, visual and audio documentaries, poetry and short fiction. We hope to engage the students in a meaningful way with complex texts that challenge and inspire them.
"Maybe everyone can live beyond what they're capable of." (Markus Zusak)
We believe that our students will take pride in reading a high quality literary work.
We hope to teach our students not only the practical reading and writing skills necessary for their academic success, but also to teach them about the dignity and heroism that lives in each human being. We hope that the love of words woven throughout Leisel's story will awaken a love of words in their own lives.
