Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Being stuck in a math classroom for consecutive days on end can prove to be a little stale. Why not steal the bacon? I juiced up the original game with algebraic math content. Students line up on opposing sides and wait for an equation or expression to be yelled out. If their number is the solution to the expression is called they race to steal the bacon (eraser). For example if -3(-2)+1 was called, both number 7's would run to get the "bacon" and run it back across their line without being tagged by the other student. The game has been made for integers, simple equations, and the order of operations. Our math department is now looking to spruce up the game a little. We are looking for numbered vests (pinnies) for the students to wear (-12 to positive 12). We thought by wearing the numbers, students could see the solution better. Also, a small megaphone and cones to hold the equations/expressions. This will fund up to 2 classrooms with many hours of algebraic math review. Winton Middle School is a Title I and No Child Left Behind school with 65% of our students receiving free lunch, and 50% speaking English as a second language.
