Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Do you remember what you liked most about first grade? Was it sitting and filling out worksheet after worksheet? No! I bet it was center time when you got to create with manipulatives and play games.

I teach 26 first graders in Detroit who come to school bright eyed, ready and eager to learn every day.

My school is 100% free or reduced lunch. We are a priority school in the state of Michigan which means we are academically performing in the bottom 5% of all Michigan schools. We have many challenges but have an extremely dedicated staff that works hard every day to get us out of the bottom 5%.

My Project

Having a class set of seat sacks will tremendously help with organizing the room. This past year I had up to 29 students in a very small space. I'm a teacher who has a journal, folder, or reference sheet for everything. This means bins and bins filled with journals, folders, and reference sheets. Passing out all these items became cumbersome and time consuming. With a set of seat sacks the students will be able to have journals, folders, and reference sheets right at their finger tips! This will make getting items, fast and efficient. No more wasted class time!

Not only will these seat sacks help with class organization, it will help with student organization.

Students will be able to learn how to keep their seat sack clean and organized. Organization is a skill that is extremely valuable in life. Organization may not be on the common core but it is a life skill that many students are not taught.
