Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My first grade students are bright, energetic scholars that have the highest of aspirations. They are primarily Hispanic English language learners that see the value of reading and have developed an insatiable desire to explore all kinds of texts. They are also strong mathematicians and scientists that love to collaborate around difficult problems and eagerly present their ideas and/or strategies.

These scholars look to literature, mathematics, and the sciences as a way to broaden their horizons and prepare them for their future careers.

As such, they are always looking for novel ways to explore the world around them, model their thinking, and explain their ideas. When my scholars have access to tools to push their thinking, show their ideas creatively, and challenge them, they thrive. They show an increased motivation to learn, collaborate more effectively, and engage in richer discussions.

My Project

I am requesting a class set of headphones for my scholars to use throughout the school day. During the literacy block, readers would use these to listen and read along to books at their reading levels to build their fluency and motivation to read. My mathematicians would also use these to listen to songs to practice skip counting and to play problem-solving games and puzzles. My scientists would use the headphones to observe animals, the orbit of the earth, and to learn about how engineers plan and revise their schematics.

Each of my scholars will have access to these centers for at least 315 minutes per week to explore and to make connections to their course content.

These centers are important because it allows learners to build their reading and mathematical fluency and scientific background knowledge. With these comfortable headphones, my scholars will able to concentrate on their tasks as they are working independently.
