Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students in my kindergarten classroom, in the far south-east side of Chicago, are amazing. Listening to their conversations while they are participating in an exploration lesson proves to me, time and time again, that active learning is taking place. And their favorite way to learn? You guessed it--hands-on! Some of my students, because of their living situations, have never had the opportunity to feel the joy and awe of watching something they sowed sprout or felt the responsibility of tending to living things.
Young children are natural scientists!
Kindergarten is very much a transition age in which children are learning to be independent. They are ready to explore their environment and are buzzing with ideas on how the world works.
My Project
My Kindergarten classroom is housed in a building that was supposed to be a temporary structure. 25 years later, we see the effects of the building being used long after its time. The neighborhood and the surrounding area has been under investigation for environmental pollution from local factories.
Dust and dirt comes through the vents causing children with allergies to be constantly unwell.
A HEPA filter that will help filter out some of the toxins in the air would help immensely with their health and wellness. I am also asking for a small refrigerator because the air conditioning in our building is not usually functioning. This means not only are the students cranky and unable to focus on academics, but some of them get bloody noses from the heat. The refrigerator will ensure that I will always have cold water on hand for them.
Finally, I asked for some healthy snacks. Some days seem so long for my little ones and the length of time between arrival and lunch seems so far away for them! Having snacks to offer my Kindergarten students would be a great help to have them wait a little longer until lunch time.
