Staying Healthy is Part of Academic Success

My students need hand sanitizer because they don't have regular access to hand-washing water, antibacterial wipes for their desks, and various other health-related items.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We all know what it's like to be sitting next to someone who is sneezing and worry that we're going to be next. My school does not even provide tissues, and my students have many needs when it comes to staying healthy!

My students try to learn in an environment that is perpetually unclean.

Our school encourages teachers to paint over dirt and grime on the student's desks, and does not provide any hygiene or cleaning supplies. My students see their environment as a reflection of how much they are cared about, and my own budget won't allow me to provide these things for my students at the moment.

My Project

My students have a right to have access to tissues, hand sanitizer, germicidal wipes for their desks and doorknobs, fresh air, and the occasional vitamin C-laden fruit snacks! It will help them get healthy and stay healthy so that they can attend more classes and be more attentive and active in the lessons. Not to mention, it will help their teachers stay healthier, too! The bathrooms are kept locked and students can't wash their hands. The drinking fountains are all disconnected, because there is lead in the pipes (students must drink from water coolers). Being able to enter a classroom that smells fresh, being able to wipe a smudge off your desk and not worry about who left it there, and getting a surprise fruit snack for a correct answer would mean a lot to someone who never eats breakfast. It is frustrating for students who want to be clean and healthy to spend all day in a place where many people are always sick and germs spread like wildfire.

This project is important, because our health is so important.

Having tissues available when your nose is running shouldn't be something that anyone, let alone our students, should have to worry about when they have so many other things to worry about. Like the test on Thursday. These supplies will let me keep my classroom clean and germ-free for the rest of the 2012 school year, and probably all the way through 2013.
