Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have an effervescent group of students this year, full of energy and eager to learn. As a teacher in a low-income/urban school district, my students are faced with many obstacles both in and out of the classroom. Despite the negativities they may encounter, they still come to my classroom with a smile on their face.
This year our academy became a Leader In Me school.
Many of the habits we are learning about encourage the students to set goals and be proactive when making decisions. I can see through their daily actions and choices, that they are striving to set an example and become role models, not only for their peers but for their families and communities. I want to give them the opportunity to thrive and reach their goals. This project will help them do so.
My Project
Students learn in many different ways. Teachers no longer have auditory, visual, and hands-on strategies as the only options. Students are active learners, not only actively thinking, but actively moving while learning. We have been slowly converting our classroom to flexible seating. Flexible seating allows the students the option to choose their learning area. Student focus changes from day to day and their ability to focus at various seating areas will keep them more engaged in the classroom.
Flexible seating changes the atmosphere for learning.
It can be difficult to sit at a desk all day and remain on task for some students. With flexible seating students begin to think of the classroom as a second home, somewhere they can comfortably learn. Our class was able to receive a large carpet in a previous project that allows students to sit or lay back while they learn. We would like to add a small table to our classroom so they can sit on floor cushions and work. We chose a futon as a cheaper alternative to a couch so students could sit and work at their leisure. Since some of these seating areas are on the floor we added clipboards to use as a hard writing surface.
