Staying Cool in Second Grade

My students need a portable air conditioner to stay cool during the sweltering September, early October, May, and June months.

My Students

Why is it that every office building, hospital, restaurant, and public building has air conditioning, but our young students are not afforded the same luxury? Have you tried working in a sweltering environment? It is difficult for adults to stay focused and on task, let alone seven-year-olds.

These 25 students are smart and motivated young learners from Wisconsin.

However, our school is an older building that is not equipped with a central air conditioning system. Therefore our rooms get toasty warm on hot fall and summer days. It is difficult to maintain stamina or focus on the tasks at hand when our heart rate is elevated, the air is stagnant and hot, and all we want to do is go somewhere cool to nap.

My Project

This portable air conditioner would greatly improve the quality of life of up to 30 individuals per school year. Students are miserable when they are at school in the months of September and June, not to mention summer months for students that attend summer school. This air conditioner would help us forget about the heat, enabling us to focus on the learning that we need to do. Also, instances of anger and disruption would be minimized, as cooler air brings more appropriate behavioral choices.

This project request would benefit so many people.

It is truly miserable to come to a classroom each day that is stifling and uncomfortable. There is no escaping the hot, humid temperatures for seven hours each day, and the students suffer because of it. This air conditioner would improve students' attitudes, focus, engagement, performance, and overall well-being in school.
