Even though it's summer break, I still meet with many of my third graders several times a week on Google Hangouts. We talk about what they are up too and how they are feeling about everything going on in our world right now. One student has been taking care of his cabbage plant he took home months ago. It is huge now! We talk about how he has to make sure to water it and make sure it's getting enough light etc. Another student talks to me about how she's dealing with being at home so much. Other students want to know what I'm doing and want me to help them with their times tables and tell me about books they are reading. They have missed being at school.
My Project
These read aloud books will help me stay connected with my third graders over the summer. We meet several times a week on google hangouts and they are starting to ask questions about the marches, racism, and how they can help. They feel isolated and helpless stuck in their homes and because they are children they don't know what they can do to help. I think by reading these wonderful titles to my students I can give them some inspiration and help them start to talk about racism. It will also help me learn about how to initiate conversations about racism as a teacher. I want to be there to guide them, help them, and learn from them. I would love to have these books to read to not only these students, but my future students as well.
