I love to engage my 11th grade U.S. History students in issues of today, and to give them the opportunity to share their commentary and insights with their classmates. In the distance learning environment, it can be challenging to get students to share - they are a little shy in Zoom classes! Students need many chances every day to exercise their voice. Building community, and building on each others' ideas, are important life and work skills, and they help us build a stronger learning environment.
My Project
One of the biggest challenges in distance learning is keeping students engaged and connected to the class, and their peers. Being able to monitor, respond to, and interact requires multiple screens and devices.
By adding an iPad to my teaching station, I will be able to engage twice as quickly with students in small groups, view the class through the students' perspective, and see all of my students at the same time.
The iPad will improve my perspective as a teacher by giving me virtual peripheral vision - a critical view whether physically or virtually in class.
