Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my fourth year teaching first graders in an integrated co-teaching classroom at a Title I school in the Bronx. The majority of my students come from low-income families and are faced with many challenges and obstacles on a day to day basis in and outside of the classroom. The pandemic has caused more of a hardship for my students and their families as they have been affected physically, emotionally, academically and/or financially. My co-teacher and I have been working diligently to provide academic and social emotional opportunities which will help students recover and stay on track throughout the year even as their lives are likely to continue to be disrupted by the pandemic. Our classroom community is an inclusive, engaging, interactive environment where my students feel safe to share their feelings and ideas. In our classroom, students know that their ideas and input are valued and respected. Their curiosity and thirst for knowledge makes our classroom community an accepting, fun and interactive learning environment. They are supportive of one another and have positive attitudes about learning. They have a "can do" attitude and always try their best.

My Project

We are fortunate to work with our fifteen students all five days of the week, three days in-person and two days remotely. Our greatest obstacle is our outdated laptops which glitch frequently and lag throughout our interactive lessons, social emotional activities, read alouds, and math instruction. It makes it very challenging for our students to remain engaged and focused during these frequent occurences. Two new laptops will give us the opportunity to create interactive, tech savvy lessons that will allow for us to reach all of our students as they actively listen and participate during lessons and activities. My co-teacher and I will be able to provide individualized instruction during small groups on virtual platforms. These new laptops will help us reduce the educational disparities which we face everyday.
