My Students

Third grade students love their art! They can draw and label plant parts and functions, or make a thank-you card for someone; it doesn't matter. They take pride and joy in their artwork. The problem with regular construction paper is that it fades as soon as it is displayed and exposed to light.

My students attend a wonderful, urban, public elementary school in California.

They represent many diverse cultures. Third graders are 8 and 9 years old, with the sparkle and curiosity of children that age. Our school focuses on teaching to the standards, but addresses the whole child through interactive and hands-on learning. We incorporate art activities into the curriculum to motivate and activate students' creativity, to focus on vocabulary, and to help them to enjoy what they are learning. Our students respond very positively to this approach, and produce amazingly beautiful work on a daily basis.

My Project

Construction paper is something we use in the classroom all the time. It has always been a source of frustration to display students' brilliant work only to find a week later it has faded and lost its appeal due to the sun. Fortunately, there is a solution to this problem. It is a higher quality of construction paper called Tru-Ray. It doesn't fade like the ordinary type, and the students can feel proud to take home their work and projects to share with their families when the display comes down. Unfortunately, because the paper does cost more, our school will only provide the regular, fading type of construction paper. Up until last year, when I tried a few packs of the Tru-Ray, I thought there was no solution to the problem. Now that I know that children's art doesn't need to be ruined by the sun, I really want to provide them with the better paper.

If you have ever spent a lot of time creating something you really liked and felt proud of, then you know how my students feel when they finish an artistic piece of work.

If you have ever had that creation break or become ruined, then you know the let-down that my students feel when their work becomes damaged by the sun. By purchasing this special art paper for us, my students will have beautiful pieces of work to take home, save and chronicle their year in third grade.
