Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach English in the fourth largest school district in Pennsylvania. Our district serves primarily low-income students from a variety of backgrounds and cultures, in particular, a community of black students whose lives and issues they face has recently come to the forefront of education. Our students in grades 9-12 benefit from interacting with teachers who understand the unique challenges black students face, how to meet them head-on, and how to change the narrative to promote a safe, successful learning space for them and all students.

Due to budget crunches, we face this school year with smaller supply and book budgets than usual.

My students come from numerous countries and bring with them unique challenges as well as wonderful backgrounds and ideas from different cultures. In addition, we are also virtually learning and need to adapt programs to meet the needs of the virtual classroom.

In addition to classwork, my students also help me with our archives. We have over 160 years of school history we are working to organize, preserve, and digitize. Working on this is a way for my students to take an active role in their school, learn about school/local history, and learn hands-on skills.

My Project

With Covid cases surging it is important to do all we can to keep healthy in our classroom. Individual hand sanitizer, tissue packs, and technology wipes allow my students to stay healthy and not need to share or pass germs to others. The books in this project will be added to our classroom library which is frequently utilized by my students to promote independent reading and literacy skills. Karen McManus is the most popular author in my classroom and my students have become more independent readers with the books in our library.
