Help me give my students 4 Chromebooks to use for research projects and to improve computer skills, including typing and navigating online applications to stay connected in the 21st-century classroom.

My Students

My students are part of the Upper Elementary Montessori program in the Birchwood School District. Our Montessori classrooms are located in a charter school located right next to the elementary school. Each classroom has 7 - 18 students. My classroom consists of 3rd through 6th grade. The area my classroom is located in is very rural and has high poverty rates, which creates its own set of challenges for students, families, and staff.

My class is comprised of children who are full of energy and ready to learn.

Each child has their own unique personality. All students love to explore the world around them and learn from it. Each student is offered breakfast, lunch, and a snack.

My Project

In the 21st-century classroom, one-to-one computer access is important because it allows the student to take ownership of their learning, keep up with current events, and fosters independence and responsibility in taking care of these precious materials. Some of you may be wondering, "Why not continue to use old fashioned books?" The answer to this question is simple: With the rapid movement and new technology forever expanding, books simply cannot keep up, causing the information to quickly become outdated. With the use of the Internet, current information is always at our fingertips. This does not mean that my students will not be using books for research and for pleasure. A balance of both is essential for true learning.

My students will use these Chromebooks to learn to navigate modern technology to enhance learning and expand future career options.

With the use of these Chromebooks, my students will have the opportunity to learn to navigate the internet world including technological applications such as Google Slides, Excel, Word documents, video editing software, email, and more.

The use of these devices engages students in learning by allowing them to carry out research projects, learn about reputable websites, practice typing skills, and self-correct their work. With these Chromebooks, I can also use online assessment programs such as Kahoot, a game-based learning tool used to quiz students on what they've learned.
