Help me give my students the opportunity to read statistical journalism narratives such as "Outliers," "Weapons of Math Destruction," and the "The Signal and the Noise."
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My 12th grade AP Statistics students are motivated learners who have sailed through the state requirements for mathematics and are ready for the challenge of college level thinking.
Most of my students are first generation college applicants and second generation immigrants.
They are trailblazers in their homes, the first to go to college- an opportunity they take seriously.
Research has shown that taking AP courses and performing well on the exam helps to prepare students for success in college, and maybe even earning some credits before they go!
My Project
In mathematics classes, reading is often limited to brief word problems or instructional text book examples. Through exposing them to best selling Statistical Literature such as "The Signal and the Noise," "Weapons of Math Destruction," and "Outliers," students will see how statistics touches all parts of life and can be used to investigate many observations made about the world around us.
By giving the students the option of which book to read, they will be more invested in their learning and more engaged in the reading.
The students will form book groups where they will discuss what they found interesting and how it connects back to the content we learned throughout the year.
