Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“I wish classes were always this small!” – 7th period student doing small group work on a station rotation day.

My students are a cohort of 130 ninth and tenth grade students deemed “at-risk”, or having a higher than normal probability of failing academically or dropping out of school.

They bear all the accouterments of systemic poverty; violence, hunger, homelessness, pregnancy, and incarceration among others. Some read at a 1st grade level, some at a 9th grade level, with the majority at a 4th grade level. From these varied backgrounds and largely ill-equipped to do so, the students must attain passing grades in Physical Science and Biology in order to graduate from high school.

My Project

An initial departmental survey revealed that my students enjoyed and had better learning retention when working in small group formats. From experience, I know that students who feel safe are more willing to take risks which results in greater comprehension. Additionally, the skills my students possess are more successful in small groups, as different students can play to their strengths and help their group-mates as the need arises. In acknowledgment of their needs, I run classes using a station rotation model so that students are able receive more small-group instruction to help raise them to grade level. On station rotation days, students visit three different stations: independent study, group collaboration (student led), and direct instruction (teacher led). A movable whiteboard with markers and a set of classroom calculators would support the station rotation model.

A movable whiteboard would allow me to post directions at different stations on the side of the classroom.

Students could also use it to teach each other relevant concepts through illustration. Having a classroom set of calculators would also support group projects, as the students would be able to come to a solution independently, and then discuss their answers with their group. Currently, having only one calculator per group handicaps the amount of work the students can accomplish.
