At the center of this community is our high school, a 9th-10grade high school that is located in south end of Hartford, Connecticut. Specifically, I teach a cohort of 150 “at risk” students within our school who participate in an extended year program. Every one of our students receive free breakfast and lunch and often share food amongst themselves if one misses lunch or is still hungry. As a cohort our motto is “Opportunity!” and we constantly discuss with our students what opportunities they can take advantage of during high school to be college and career ready. Currently, our students lack both adequate technology and the necessary skills to take advantage of modern technology in order to be competitive in the college and career market. However, our students are capable of learning these skills and are always excited to use computers and tablets when given the opportunity.
