My Students
My students love learning and enjoy new experiences. In our Title 1 school, my students have very diverse backgrounds. Despite their socio-economic hardship, my students are eager to rise to the challenges. They especially enjoy coming to music when they are looking forward to instruments we play and songs we sing and dance to.
My culturally diverse students work together as one ensemble, supporting each other and being responsible for their parts and learning.
They care about collaborating to help as an ensemble.
Our school is in southwestern Florida. It is a beautiful place to learn, perform, and grow as little musicians. Through grants, my class can obtain more instruments and explore new ways of creating and playing music. We want to have more ways of playing music and grow as musicians.
My Project
One thing I am in the process of creating in my classroom is different centers for rotation days. Each station will focus on different aspects of music. I currently have a keyboard center that allows the students to learn the notes on the piano while also experimenting with different orchestral sounds. Also, I have a corn hole game I created to help learn the staff's lines and spaces. The spaces and lines are pained to coordinate with the colors of the diatonic bookmaker sets. I also have centers for practicing reading rhythms with body percussion and dancing with ribbons.
These drum pads will allow for another center to express some rhythmic creativity on an electronic drum set with headphones so as not to disturb the other centers in the room.
In addition to allowing some free creativity days, the centers also create the perfect lesson plan to leave behind for substitutes on the rare occasions I cannot come to school. It allows for creativity even when I am out versus watching a video as many subs are not familiar with teaching music.
