Mrs. Wilson from Detroit MI is requesting supplies through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need water color paint, brushes, 35 easels and paper to enhance learning of a historic figure through the making of replicas of his art.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
The students in my class come to school daily with many challenges. Many of them don't come ready to learn lacking basic necessities like clean uniforms or even lunch. My students do not have basic school supplies like pencils, paper or even backpacks. I try to help but my salary only goes so far.
I teach children in an urban city which is in severe debt.
Our students do not receive art, music or instrumental. They are STARVING for extra curricular activities like many of the surrounding suburbs. This project will provide them with a cross cultural experience giving them the opportunity to explore art like never before. I believe that all children, poverty stricken, special needs, or rural, should have the same quality education as their more affluent counter parts. I teach ELA to two fourth grade classes in the state of Michigan. These children are full of energy that needs to be harvested into positive power. The lack of electives for my students stunts their growth and puts them at a great disadvantage. Giving them the opportunity to explore art in a non-judgmental and caring atmosphere may be a way for many of them to acquire new talents while illuminating skills that they may not have shown before.
Learning about Monet and other great artists that use water color will challenge my students to think of possibilities of careers in the art world. The easels will make them feel like real artist inspiring them to work hard and give it their best. Using the water color paper pads will be away to capture and show growth as an artist. Students using water colors will help them to see how colors combined can make new and vibrant combinations and show them that it is okay to make mistakes for mistakes with art are not mistakes but new found concepts or ideas. Students will learn that people do care about them, and that although we are in a struggling, impoverished community, there are people who are counting on them to make a difference and support them in all of their educational endeavors. This project to me, will change my students' lives by showing them that with art, you can be creative...you can have fun while learning..you can learn about people from the past and it can be meaningful!
This project is important for several reasons.
First, in our school, my students do not receive formal art education at all. It is up to the teacher to provide them with art. Secondly, this project being funded through DonorsChoose will show my students that there are people wanting to aid in their success. Finally, my students deserve to learn about and experience the same quality education that other students in affluent districts are receiving. I believe in my students and I believe in you!
