My students need supplies, such as oil pastels and chalk, in order to participate in a wider variety of educational art projects.

My Students
Somehow, in the midst of all the focus on math, language arts, and science, art has been forgotten. Sure, we have colored pencils. We have crayons. Every now and then we find some markers that still work. But these tools merely skim the surface of endless artistic possibilities.
I teach a class of 25 third graders in a mid-to-high socio-economic area of Utah.
This is, hands down, the easiest group of kids I've ever had the opportunity to teach which opens up greater opportunities for more complex artistic activities. Unfortunately, with donations going mostly to tools for reading and math (which, of course, is a good thing), our school is embarrassingly low on resources for artistic expression. I would like to change that, one step at a time.
My Project
Many students excel in math. Many students excel in reading. Many students excel in science and social studies. How many students excel in art? At our school you would be hard-pressed to find an answer to that question. This is not to say that the other subjects are not ridiculously important, only to draw attention to fact that the focus of education has been drawn so far away from art that our resources for such education are practically non-existent; a few containers of paint, some old paint brushes, maybe some glitter here and there. Art activities mainly consist of cutting and pasting, along with some coloring using crayon or colored pencils. Just a small start with these Crayola chalk and oil pastel sets would make an amazing difference in the activities we could do. With these sets, my students could begin learning about and attempting art similar to the greats! Without them, it will remain challenging to give them the true experience.
There are so many learning styles and strengths, even within a single class of 25 students.
I feel strongly that the majority of students, regardless of styles or strengths, would benefit from some attention placed on artistic expression. I'm hoping, with a little help, that I can make this a reality for my students - not just this year, but for years to come.
