My Students

Do you remember your first day at school and seeing all the great materials you are going to get to use? I remember how excited and motivated I was. I want the same memory for my young students.

My students will be young,excited,kindergarteners.

My students will be a make up of 24 -30 four, five and six year olds. For most of the children, this will their first experience in school. Kindergarten now is a full day program, all academic and very successful. The children will soon be readers, writers and whatever their future holds. The children I have face a lot of outside challenges. They are in an area that is very financially challenged . The school is all on free lunch and is a Title 1 school. Most of my students usually enter without basic school supplies (even as basic as a box of crayons), so it has been up to me, to provide the school supplies to help the children succeed. Our school and district have been facing huge budget issues. The school is shorter than ever on funds for supplies and teachers are receiving 10-14 furlough days. Even with all these challenges, I do not want my students to miss out on great learning opportunities.

My Project

The 2011-2012 school year turned out to be one of the most successful and amazing years in all the years I have taught. My little kindergarteners were reading at a second grade level and writing multiple sentences. I had 95 percent proficiency on District Reading and District Writing and Math tests. In the past our kindergarteners were averaging 33% proficiency on these tests. I can credit this success, in a great way to Donors Choose and classroom supporters. This past school year my students had materials to help them and support their learning. Sight Word journals to help the children practice and learn their words. Kinders are suppose to learn 35 sight words. My students learned 100-200 sight words, with fluency. The sight word journals are wonderful materials to help the children practice independently. The children used dry erase markers and pencil boxes to practice spelling and writing. And with this, they loved to write and spell. So I am requesting these materials again.

I am asking for Sight Word Journals, pencil boxes, folders, dry erase markers and glue bottles.

These materials will help my students start the school year prepared and ready to learn, without the limitations of material shortage.
