Starting the Day Hungry Impacts Learning of Special Needs Students

Help me give my students with special needs breakfast and snack items to eliminate hunger and increase learning!

My Project

I work with an amazing group of middle school students who are excited about learning! They are in a variety of special education programs and have individualized education plans (IEPs). Many are English language learners (ELL) and a large percentage come from impoverished homes. Students frequently do not come to school with the necessary basic school supplies to function within a classroom and often do not have access to technology outside of school.

Because many families rely on school for food, children come to school hungry, and the school-provided breakfast does not adequately fill them.

Some arrive on late buses and do not want to miss more class time to go to the cafeteria for food. Hungry students do not have the ability to focus on schoolwork and, when coupled with special needs, can severely impact school success. These basic food items and the cart to store them will allow me to quickly provide my students with breakfast items.
