My students need a push. Group white board use can improve collaboration in class and the books I chose promote scientific thinking for my low income, refugee community.

My Students
Discussion, inquiry, and experiments are the goals of the modern classroom. I try to promote scientific thought as much as I do physics. I strive to change the way students think by placing them on the edge of science. I work with physics education researchers to try new ideas and keep fresh.
Our school houses a very diverse population, being on of the few refugee communities in Georgia.
We have over 50 countries and over 40 languages in our school. Our students need to work hard to learn not only our material, but our language. What they lack in foundation, they make up in spirit. I choose to think that no matter where they come from, they will forever be moving. I want to help them move in the right direction.
My Project
My students will use the white erase markers in class to communicate and collaborate as a class. Much of my class deals with problem solving, so the ability to express their thoughts gives them a chance to reinforce their thinking habits as they discuss with each other in their group, and later the class.
The books will help them broaden their view of a scientist from some guy in a lab coat with big fuzzy beard and crazy hair wearing glasses to the next Mary Curie. These internal stereotypes often act as invisible boundaries for the students. The books I chose promote questioning things in a scientific manner, that science is for anyone, and that there are still questions worth solving from art to the stars.
Often times, the biggest hindrance to the classroom is bureaucracy and funding.
I cannot give them a chance to learn about motion if they can't measure time. They cannot learn about minority scientists without these history books. The schools only order enough white erase markers for me to put up my schedule for the day.
My students will be given the chance to express themselves, sprout new ideas, and step out of their normal routine to experience science instead of watch.
