My students need paper lanterns, balance ball chairs, and a storage cart for a bright, engaging stress-free learning environment after our community suffered so much loss from Hurricane Harvey.
I work at a school located in a very small community that sits on the southern state line of Texas and Louisiana. I’ve been here for 20 years and I’ve always known we were more of a family; but, that belief was tested and confirmed when two days before the first day of the school year Hurricane Harvey devastated our town. Of the 900 students we service, 600 were directly affected by the storm. Many lost everything. Not only possessions, but their very homes. Our entire Junior High campus was relocated to the high school. This one building is now functioning as two whole schools with two entire sets of staff, and two entire student populations. We created classrooms in any and every available space, including gyms, closets, foyers, and dressing rooms. We’ve each had to create our “classrooms” from extremely limited furnishings and, for the most part, without technology.
My Project
After so many of my students suffered such great personal loss, due to Hurricane Harvey, I want to create a bright, engaging and safe place for them to learn. My students are dealing with harsh realities and extreme chaos, in their daily lives, trying to recover and rebuild from the storm. School should be a safe refuge. I want to create a space where they can escape from stress and anxiety, that is also a functioning learning environment.
We were out of our building and in several "temporary" classrooms, last year.
This year we will return to our campus, but most of us are starting over from scratch. Flexible seating options, stress relievers, and a soothing environment will benefit our students tremendously. We will use the balance ball yoga chair and welcome saddle for flexible seating options. The bouncy kick fit chair bands will help students focus by allowing them to move without distracting others. The Lochas indoor rug will a chat the room and make it feel homey. The educational light filters will help students with focus and visual challenges, such as dyslexia. The Modway Ripple Back Office Chair will be used for individual writing conferences with students. The mobile 3 tier utility cart will be used for art supplies to incorporate art into our daily journals and writing projects. The artificial tropical fish will promote relaxation and a calming environment for students.
