My Students
I love the Vlogbrothers' sign-off: "Don't forget to be awesome!" In order to be truly awesome, my students need supplies so we can use Kagan cooperative learning strategies to develop academic and social skills.
Our students are from all over the area — some live in the city, while others make their home in the suburbs.
The socioeconomic divide here is as wide as the region's.
Our International Baccalaureate school serves a high poverty community, but boasts a 100% graduation rate, acceptance to prestigious universities and programs, and a top ranking among all public schools in our state.
That success is due to the impressive commitment of both faculty and community. Our students understand the difference an excellent education will make in their lives and the dedication it will take to earn it. They spend their free time serving in the community and finding increasingly challenging and meaningful learning opportunities.
As IB learners, we are reflective and caring thinkers and communicators, and this project helps us achieve that vision.
My Project
These supplies will help us use fun and effective Kagan cooperative learning activities in class. With these materials, we can easily and quickly share ideas, quiz each other, confirm understanding, and more!
Have you ever taken a class that was all about sitting still, staying quiet, and working alone?
Did you get as much from it as you could have? We all learn better when given opportunities to collaborate and cooperate with others (and it's more fun, too!).
Sticky notes will let us annotate books, offer feedback on each others' work, share opinions and evidence, and create living documents we can change as needed.
The dry erase boards and markers will let us work in partners and small groups to come to consensus, check for understanding, and more.
With these materials, I can use some awesome research-based strategies to help all of my students learn and retain more. Studies show correlations between these activities and long-term gains in students' academic and social success. Help me improve all of my classes with the items I need to use these effective activities!
