Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The challenges that face schools today are growing by the day. It is our job to make change possible!
My students are in seventh and eighth grade.
They are thriving readers and writers and simply need the tools and resources to succeed. My school is located in West Harlem NYC in a rich, yet underserved, community. My school is 99% free lunch, meaning many of my students are living below the poverty line. The majority of my students are African American and Hispanic.
My Project
My students are capable of so much. Just recently our middle school has added electives to our schedule. Many students have chosen to participate in the yearbook. To create this, many resources are needed but it is all worth it when I see the faces of the kids as they receive their very first! Some of these materials include folders for each student to organize their assigned pages as they collect photographs and articles. Also, accessories for our class macbook will help them design the yearbook pages on our website. I am also requesting some books which will help the other teachers in my school thrive in the classroom, meeting the needs of each and every student. One example of a book is "Speak Out! Debate and Public Speaking in the Middle Grades" which will further help me start the debate program at my school while still connecting the program to their English instruction. Another is "Best Books for Boys" to help teachers find the perfect book for the most reluctant readers!
This project is so important because without enrichment for the students and support for the teachers, few things are possible.
Both students and teachers in EVERY school deserve the tools they need to succeed.
