I teach third grade in an inner-city school. The students here come from a variety of economic backgrounds and ethnically diverse cultures. One hundred percent of children receive free breakfast and lunch. Almost 60% of the children do not speak English as their first language. There is a multitude of languages spoken within the families. Our school serves students in grades PK-6 and provides a rigorous curriculum, dedicated teachers, and a safe learning environment. My students are such a huge part of my life. Teachers know that our job does not leave us the minute we walk out of school. We worry, we laugh and we get to know a great deal about our students. We try to reach our students in a way that will leave a lasting impression. Many of our students receive backpack food on the weekend, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can so they can be successful.
My Project
Storage bins will help the students keep their assignments organized and their desks free of clutter. We need pencil sharpeners, tape dispensers, scissors, and staplers for everyday activities. The large bins will be used to organize differentiated reading materials.
The students like to show their independence and need access to basic supplies they can use on their own.
What child doesn't enjoy the opportunity to staple their own papers or use "grown-up" scissors?
The supplies will be set up in an area that is easily accessible to the children. Being able to use the supplies independently will teach them responsibility.
