My students need math materials to start up a new TK classroom. Hands-on counting boxes, patterning with math trays, and fine motor tools provide an excellent start!
After 10 years of team teaching kindergarten with my best friend, I am moving next door to learn and explore with fun and frisky four year old students! I will be starting up a brand new classroom. My experience with five year old students has given me a background to create the ideal TK classroom.
The students that will be attending my transitional kindergarten classroom will come from 3 different attendance areas.
A majority will continue on to a kindergarten classroom at the same site as TK. The site is very culturally and economically diverse. Approximately 30% speak English as a second language. We have recently reached a 50% free or reduced lunch status. This will be a first school experience for many students in this classroom and some will be just beginning to learn English as a second language.
My Project
As California roles back the age requirement for kindergarten, more and more students will be attending transitional kindergarten. This gives students who are born in October and November, the developmental time necessary to acquire early literacy skills to succeed in kindergarten the following school year. Fine motor skills is essential to this success.
Learning by using concrete objects while developing fine motor skills is optimal. I plan to use the counting boxes and math trays during center time where students can works as partners to develop social skills. Learning should be fun and engaging. The supplies I have selected are a start for my new classroom and adventure. Students will learn social skills, fine motor skills, and early math skills as they learn to count objects, create patterns, and much, much more.
After 10 years of teaching kindergarten with my best friend and job partner, I am excited to step out and use my knowledge of early literacy to prepare students for kindergarten.
I have the knowledge, desire, and skills necessary to prepare future kindergarteners for the new common standards. I need a start with obtaining materials for these precious students.
