Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in central Connecticut. There are over 1600 students at our school and over 60% receive free and reduced lunch. I teach 125 of these students in 10th grade Biology and 11th and 12th grade Botany and Zoology.
The school is incredibly diverse, bringing students together from a huge variety of different backgrounds to share their many different voices, opinions, and experiences together in the classroom.
My students use the knowledge they gain from my science classes to help them work with others and solve problems in their future classes and beyond.
My Project
The donations for this project will help my students become citizen scientists and help to show them that growing vegetables is a healthy and cost-saving alternative to what they get in the grocery and convenience stores. My botany class has inherited a school garden. They are very excited to start getting their hands dirty and start planting. Many of my students have never planted a seed in the ground to watch it grow and have not harvested fresh vegetables before. The first step to getting this garden started is growing the plants that will go in it. Can't wait!
