Help me give my students an accessible novel to start the discussion about culture and racism and large notepads to facilitate group discussions while being able to social distance.
My 10th-grade students are eager to learn, but several come from a low, socioeconomic background. Many are the first to potentially graduate from high school and have the possibility of attending college.
Being a small, rural district, culture and racism can be difficult and uncomfortable discussions in the classroom, yet, in our current world, very important.
Reading Sue Monk Kidds, Secret Life of Bees, will offer a relatable message and a springboard for my students to dig deeper into these topics.
My Project
I am asking for 50 copies of The Secret Life and Bees. This novel will add a a female author, strong female characters and themes relevant for today's world and current climate, including racism and gender to our literature studies.
By reading Secret Life of Bees with my students, my hope is that we can grow together and create equity in our class, school and community.
These novels can be taught in the classroom or virtually. With discussions online or in person, the reading and discussions are valuable. Using the large sticky pad is a way to get students moving around, while safely distancing. Also, the notes become visual reminders of critical thinking.
