Having 3 complete class sets of Fahrenheit 451 will enable students to have their own copy during class instruction and to take home for reading. Currently, there aren't enough for 1 full class (most purchased back in 2000 and are in bad shape). Several students do not have the internet at home, so reading digitally is not an option. For the unit, we will explore the themes: "The Value of Happiness in a Dystopian World" and"The Price of Progress" through class discussion, Socratic Seminars and a synthesis essay, preparing them for their high school and beyond plans. Connecting Ray Bradbury's short stories with one of his novel's sets students up for success because they will be more familiar with his writing style and themes. Making these connections builds student confidence.
