My students need books that they are excited to read--they selected books and genres themselves! From the graphic novel Maus, to No Easy Day, to Unbroken--they chose!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students want to read more, but they don't know that they love reading yet. These books--many of which they've asked for by name--will help spark their interest.
Our school is amazing.
We're in a low income area, where jobs don't seem to be coming back as fast as elsewhere. Where gangs and drugs are always hovering around the fringes. Where students who are future doctors, lawyers, and teachers step around homeless people on their way to campus. But we're amazing because our students show up and work hard and find value in education.
Many of my students don't have much time for homework because mom or dad is working two jobs and they have to take care of brothers and sisters. But most of them get their work done. They are what I would call reluctant readers, and these books will help stimulate their love for reading.
My Project
It's the beginning of the school year, and many students are grumbling and complaining because summer's over. Before I took them to the library to get books for a book report, I asked them what kind of books they want to read. After prompting and prodding, I got a few titles, and a lot of genres.
Students will read the books and then give a prepared presentation about the book. They will uses Google Slides to summarize and visually represent their reading, and they will practice enunciation, body language and all of the other public speaking skills while they share what made their book excellent. Then, students will choose someone else to loan the book to, so that person can read the book for the second quarter book report.
Reluctant readers always need a little extra push to get their imaginations going.
Competing with the instant stimuli of television and video games is tough, but since these are genres and titles that students have selected themselves, my hope is that this experience begins a life-long love of reading for all of my students.
Once they learn to love reading, their imaginations can expand, their dreams become brighter, their goals become bigger, and their success becomes a greater possibility.
