This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are 6th graders at a Title I school in Baltimore City.
They come from diverse backgrounds, including many immigrant families.
The majority of my students are learning or have learned English as a second language and 100% of students receive free lunch. We have been nicknamed, "The School of Many Nations," as our school population includes students from around the world. We are an urban school in a struggling community and school district.
My students are bright, eager and resilient. They come to school motivated to make themselves and their parents proud. My students have so much to offer and over the years have taught me many lessons about culture, family, and what it means to really struggle. Despite the obstacles that my students face on a daily basis, they inspire each other (and their teachers!) to be their best.
My Project
School should be a place where students not only learn academics, but also life skills. I am continuously working to give my students more responsibility so that they can be organized, neat, and prepared for life outside of the classroom. Responsibilities also allow my students to feel productive, capable, and part of our classroom community. We need supplies such as file folders, staplers, and paper clips to stay organized. Cleaning wipes will be useful as students are tasked with keeping their desks and surroundings clean (and germ free!).
My students are motivated to learn, but their parents are often unable to provide them with all of their basic supplies.
In the past, I have scrambled to find supplies for students once the school year begins. This often means that students feel left behind during the first days of school. This year I'd like to be proactive and prepared for any gaps in supplies. No child should feel left out of learning because they don't have the basic supplies to get the year started right. We need pencils, notebooks, erasers, and paper to get working on the very first day of school.
Lastly, we need a printer for the classroom. School and home life can be stressful for my students. I like to provide them an opportunity for quiet reflection each week, and they thoroughly enjoy coloring complex patterns and designs. A printer will allow me to print new coloring activities, as well as print grade sheets and updates for parents.
