I'm a NYC Board of Education Teacher. I've been working for the board since 2002. The school I work at is in Brownsville, New York. I teach Pre-Kindergarten in P.S./I.S. 323. It is so hard for our school to get supplies because we are a title one school and we are in a low- income area. About 98% of our students get free lunch. The supplies in my school are very scarce. I feel we need more supplies in order to keep our children coming to school, to want more. I would like the supplies so that my students can be creative. Pre-k is the beginning stage of our students' learning, and without supplies it's hard for them to get the adequate knowledge they need to succeed in future grades. You have to have that background knowledge in order to make a successful step. Pre-K is not a testing grade, so the majority of the school's funding goes to those grades which need to achieve good test scores. I think it would be great for the September children to have all the resources they need right in the classroom. This will help me because I can teach and do more projects and creative things with my students. At the moment, the children constantly have to go to the neighboring library to borrow books and I have to spend money to make sure there are adequate manipulatives in the math center. It would be helpful for the new 18 children to have enough materials available in the classroom.
