This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our high school has built up an impressive lab capability, through fund-raising, corporate and university donations. Our teachers are trained and kids are motivated, but we require the consumable supplies to sustain and expand our efforts. We need PCR beads to copy genes we seek to understand.

Our high school lab is actively pursuing the capacity to run authentic science research projects right inside our own building.

Each new piece of equipment gets us closer to being able to run the kind of start-to-finish experiments they've seen in university visits, but can't in class without help! Ours is a grade 9-12 public school dedicated to meeting the needs of recent immigrant students in a large urban setting. We work with speakers of diverse language, cultural and educational backgrounds to ensure all receive access to the learning that will allow them to achieve their own American dreams. As a biology teacher, I struggle to overcome these personal differences, as well as the abstract nature of my discipline, by providing as many materials as I can which reach the kids 'where they are.' By allowing kids to learn science by doing it, they not only learn the discipline concepts, they also have a context for acquiring the language to describe the experience

My Project

Biotechnology is the cutting edge of modern science. Over time, the cost of equipment has brought it within reach of the high school classroom. Preparing students for college-level biology means familiarizing them with the tools, techniques and concepts behind DNA science in general, and the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in particular. Being able to make many copies of a sample of DNA is a critical step to many experiments. Although there are other options available, in a high school context having the materials pre-made in a stable tube is the only consistent and reliable way to do this work. In the coming year, we are especially interested in extracting genes from Wolbachia, a genus of bacteria that infects insects. If we are able to amplify genes from these bacteria, we will be able to seek the infection in bugs from around the school. Positive results will be sent to a cooperating scientific institution, which will sequence the DNA, and upload it into a worldwide database.

This project gives students the opportunity to participate in an authentic research project in collaboration with the scientific community.

They will develop hands-on skills which, until recently, were not taught until the university level. In the process you'll help young people develop a personal relationship with science, and build a strong context for language learning. Please help if you can!
