S.T.A.R.S. Run/Walk Club

My Students

Can you imagine living in a neighborhood full of gangs, drugs, violence and extreme poverty? Although it might seem like a different world for most of us, the students that I teach at my school are surrounded by these negative influences daily.

96% of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced lunch.

They barely have clean clothes and are lucky to have a pair of tennis shoes. They are full of energy and desire to play sports and be active. It is difficult for many of them to join leagues or after-school sports teams because most of their parents/guardians will not take them to their practices and games. These children need to have an outlet for their stress, anxiety and built-up energy and many of them turn to fighting and aggression because that's all they know.

My Project

The resources that I am requesting (batons, cones, hurdles, speed ladder, spot markers, stop watch, folders, paper, index cards and a hole puncher) will help me start the S.T.A.R.S. Run/Walk club after school. The students will be able to run or walk for 1 hour as well as talk about nutrition and other health/fitness related topics. The students will improve their endurance, speed and agility and will also gain a tremendous amount of knowledge about what their body is doing when they exercise and why. My goal is for the students to use the run/walk club as a safe place to come to exercise, relieve stress and anxiety, build and strengthen relationships, and learn how to cope with outside influences in positive, healthy ways.

Your donations for my students will make a lasting impact on these students.

It will keep them off of the streets after school, exercising instead of getting into trouble. They will learn that exercise can be fun even though it might hurt or be difficult at times. They will quickly notice that the feeling of euphoria after a long walk or run is absolutely priceless. I hope that my students learn to turn to exercise instead of using violence to cope with the negative influences in their lives.
