Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a low socioeconomic area where several family members share small homes or apartments because of the housing crisis. The students that I serve are currently under lock down in cramp homes, most lacking dedicated learning spaces, attempting to learn away from our beloved classroom.
Our classroom was the safe space the students trusted to learn and grow.
In the classroom, we all had "home court" advantage, meaning that we had established the environment to suit our teaching and learning needs. Now, the children are in their homes, most under not ideal learning conditions, competing for WIFI connectivity, because though they have been provided chrome books by my district and even hot spots, when multiple people share the device, the connectivity slows down and becomes unstable. Distance learning is indeed a challenge for the children that I serve.
My Project
I have been creating teaching videos starring me and my refrigerator. I have placed a magnetic "white board" mat on my refrigerator where I write and teach concepts recording using my cellphone camera and gooseneck cellphone holder. I'm making it work though the surface area is small and though what I have written on the refrigerator "white board" I wish to stay as reference for the next recording, it often gets erased considering the fact that it is the most touched space: it is the refrigerator after all. So, I have also started making anchor charts to record the concepts I have taught until the next recording but I am running out of space to hold those charts until next time. Furthermore, the teaching resources I have brought home from books to chart paper to markers to math manipulatives, all need a space other than my kitchen table when not in use.
This easel with storage that I hope to purchase will give me much more white board surface area to teach off of.
Not to mention it has rings and clips to hold anchor charts and eight storage containers to place and store all resources off of my kitchen table. I have measured out the perfect spot to place the easel when not in use. With the ease of just pulling out the easel to record a teaching video or pull out stored resources from the storage container, I will have small slice of my classroom in my home. With the reality of dealing with the unknown and accepting our new norm for now, I must do what I possibly can to bring the classroom virtually into each of my students' homes, even if it's just me and my easel.
