Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Students in 4th grade at my school are motivated to learn about math and science, but rarely get the opportunity to experience it hands-on because of the cost of these field trips or events.
Students at my school are part of a STEM academy, which means that they learn about math and science topics throughout their school day.
We frequently read about science ideas and scientists, write about mathematicians, and we use math all day long! The school is located in a low-income, multilingual area. We seek to enrich curriculum with interactive, hands-on learning.
My Project
Our upcoming language arts unit integrates the idea of astronomy with mythology. Students will be learning about stars, how stars are formed, and the nature of stars while studying the ways that various cultures around the world believe constellations were formed. We will be reading a variety of Native American constellation myths to help students see the connection between science and literacy. We hope to have an exciting start to this unit by bringing the STARLab experience to our school!
The STARLab is a traveling planetarium where students will get to view the constellations as if they were looking at the actual night sky.
I believe this will create excitement for our upcoming language arts unit while allowing students to see a realistic model of the stars. Students will remember this opportunity for a lifetime because of its unique nature and the engaging stories they will hear.
