My Project

What makes this project special is that it will bring the powerful story of Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli into the hands of every student in my 6th grade reading class. This novel is not only age-appropriate and engaging, but also rich in themes of individuality, empathy, and standing up for what’s right—messages that deeply resonate with middle schoolers. With a class set, we can read and explore this novel together, fostering meaningful discussions, deep thinking, and a sense of community as we connect with the characters and each other.

The primary goal of this project is to increase my students' literacy stamina and nurture a true love of reading.

By providing students with their own copies of Stargirl, they will be able to fully immerse themselves in the novel, which helps build reading stamina and comprehension. Full-novel engagement is a key part of our curriculum, and having the books in hand allows us to delve into character development, plot structure, and thematic analysis. Through this experience, students will become more confident, thoughtful readers who are excited to explore new stories both inside and outside of the classroom.

What makes my students special is their curiosity, resilience, and capacity for growth. Many of them face challenges outside the classroom, yet they come to school each day ready to learn and grow. Often it is a struggle to engage students in reading and I have found that a good full-class novel is a great way to engage even my most resistant readers. Stargirl is a special text because the themes are ones that many students can relate to and therefore a class set of Stargirl would not just support their academic growth it would also show them that their voices and experiences matter, and that reading can be a powerful, transformative experience.
