My Students

My classroom will be home to two classes of 24-28 fifth graders, each with a big heart filled with curiosity and an enthusiastic drive to learn more. I know this because I taught this group of students during the 2016-2017 school year when they were third graders! My students are in a fifth-grade Math and Science classroom at a Title I school in the Washington Heights neighborhood of upper NYC. Ninety-four percent of students receive free or reduced-price lunch, and 30% are English Language Learners. Like most children, my students love having hands-on experiences and I want ALL of my students to be able to have access to their own personal learning needs!

Inspiring my students to learn with a hands-on, engaging environment is the mission in the classroom.

At the end of the year, I want my students to say, "This was the best year in math, ever!" My students deserve the best math education I can give them and I desire to be able to provide a mathematical education that will encourage my students to reach for the stars!

My Project

Think about when you go to Starbucks to complete some work. Why do you choose to work there? Where do you choose to sit? Regardless, when you walk into Starbucks, you have a choice. You get to choose where you sit. No one checks you in and directs you to a spot, telling you that you must sit there for the remainder of the day to do your work. If you need to get up, walk around, or choose a different seat, you are free to do so. Why can't my classroom look like this?

The world is changing, yet our classrooms are remaining much the same - Revitalizing space is a straightforward way to let students exercise choice in the learning environment and find academic success on their own terms.

Research shows that allowing students to sit in a comfortable, flexible seating greatly enhances their focus. With a fulfilled project, my classroom would change quite a bit. I would be able to offer my students a variety of seating options based on what best meets their needs. Students would be able to sit at the tall table with a bar stool or relax on the rug, These options will allow them to become more comfortable, find a responsible working space and get the most out of our work times and classroom activities.
