A majority of my students come from low-income families. Since I teach technology, I have EVERY student in the district in grades kindergarten through 6th grade - 1200 students in all between 4 buildings. We have multiple special classrooms for life skills students, learning support students and emotional support students. All students, no matter what their challenge or level of learning attend my weekly computer classes. Sadly, the local Sony plant which provided a tax base for our community closed, so funds have been cut across the board including money for our technology program.
Many of my students do not have any form of technology at home, so they are always happy and appreciative to come to my weekly computer classes in our school's computer lab.
Without funding for any new technologies, I strive to provide my students with interesting and creative technology experiences that will prepare them for the future. I love it when I see the smiles on their faces as the walk in the lab and ask - "What are we going to do today?" It makes me so happy that many express every week how much the love technology class.
My Project
Students will work together in groups building Star Wars Droids. Students will vote on a name for their droid and write an imaginative back story about how their droids came to be.
My students love Star Wars and robotics, so building our own droids will be a fun way to learn more about robotics and teamwork.
Each student will perform part of the building process. The chief engineer will assign these tasks to team members. If the droid is not operable when complete, the chief engineer will guide the students through the disassemble and rebuilding process to find out where the team went wrong.
We will use our programming skills to operate our completed droids to see how many different movements and tasks they can perform.
