Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are enthusiastic in hands-on, project based learning, and I'm constantly searching and developing engaging projects to spark their curiosity academically. At the end of the day, I want them to share what they have learned in science.
Our student demographic is labeled as low socioeconomic status.
However, these students want to perform well academically even with limited academic support at home. This project will allow me to fill them with knowledge and spark a passion for discovery.
My Project
Sphero SPRK edition is a robotic sphere that allows the user to control via the iPad mini by programming its movement and function. Students will learn to calculate Sphero’s speed variation while comprehending subjects such as metric conversion, expressions and equations, and forces and motion. Moreover, students will design their obstacle course in four stages. Stage one will have a requirement at two feet by six inches. In stage two, students will need to add a total distance of three feet, but the course displacement between starting and finish line cannot exceed two feet. Stage three will require the students to design a small hill that is one inch in height, four feet in length, and six inches wide. The last stage will require students to create a narrow cave with the dimension of the opening at 6” X 5” X 7”. Students will test their calculation by programming Sphero to travel through their course.
This project will provide real life, hands-on experience, and collaboration among students.
In addition to students using Sphero to connect the relationship between speed, distance, and time, students will also interact further with the code they write and to observe the result of their product. Students will collaborate to build a section of their course, develop a block of code, then test their code by remotely programming Sphero.
