I'm a City Teaching Alliance Fellow and 4th grade ELAR/Social Studies teacher via Dallas ISD serving a Title I school, where 99% of the scholars come from low-income families and receive free or reduced-price lunch. This doesn't solemnly define the children who attend the school. They are brilliant, full of life, and operate with a growth mindset. My scholars live in a tough neighborhood yet this doesn't keep them from being South Dallas proud! They deserve the best education and learning environments. I do not want them to worry about their needs being met in any classroom. I want to provide them as much as I can to be successful readers in my English Language Arts Class.
My scholars are in need of new experiences through literature.
In previous years being exposed to a diverse classroom library filled with various books has helped children with viewing multiple perspectives and exposed them to rich text. As a result scholars enjoy reading, build stamina, can build their confidence and self esteem in regards to their reading abilities as they navigate the challenges of 4th grade.
When scholars don't have access to a librarian, and books the school library they rely on our classroom to help them get closer to their individual reading stamina goals. Each school year my scholars create a list of books they'd love to get their hands on, help us get the books we'd like to experience when we drop everything and read for 20-30 minutes a day during independent reading time. We are in need of new books and cushions for reading cozy spots, and flashlights for flashlight reading. Please help us work toward being strong readers and critical thinkers.
