This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a Title I school with 99% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. I am teacher of students with autism who are amazing! Each is only three or four years old but brilliant in his or her own right. Some are very vocal and receive time in the general education classroom.
One has gone from saying three words at the beginning of last school year to speaking in complete sentences.
Others are learning to use the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) to express their needs. I love the way my students work together in play center and I am proud of the way they have welcomed new students into our class!
My Project
My students use a curriculum called STAR. It is based on autism research and teaches a variety of skills including matching, counting, and picture identification. The curriculum kit includes a set of color, shape and picture flashcards. The set also includes a group of cars, bowls, spoons and small instruments that match the picture cards.
I am requesting a new set of STAR Level One flashcards that match the materials included in our classroom curriculum kit.
Most of our classroom lessons are based on the STAR curriculum but I also try to incorporate my students' interests. One of my students loves to explore water and places items like paper into liquids to see if they float. He inspired me to order a STEM station so he and his classmates can explore floating versus sinking objects more closely. The other materials for this project will help me deliver lessons and organize student work.
