My Students

Last year, I introduced five standing desks to my Health & Sports Medicine classroom. Students who utilized them expressed how much they enjoyed not being stuck in a desk.

The brain is not as active when students spend an excessive amount of time sitting still and disengaged.

This lack of activity may lead to depression, low self-esteem, suicidal thoughts and other problems. We are more healthy, physically and mentally, when we are engaged, active and productive.

A way to help combat these mental health issues is to add movement to the day. Moving increases blood flow and releases certain chemicals in the brain that can improve moods and boost self-esteem. The benefits that come from standing desks are not the cure to all of the mental health issues listed above, but they can aid in the healing process. Think of a standing desk and an active lifestyle as one of the tools to help improve the overall mental health of students. After all, they spend a significant part of their day in a school building - doesn’t it make sense to create an environment that will encourage healthy behaviors?

My Project

Stand-Up desks offer fewer classroom distractions, reduce behavioral disturbances, and improve overall collaboration.

No more constant interruptions from fidgeting students requesting bathroom breaks just to get their blood flowing.

Enhanced Health & BMI

Our research shows a 17-35% increase in calorie burn rates & a 5% decrease in BMI percentile over traditional desks. This improvement to healthy weight leads to increased confidence & self-esteem, directly tied to attendance rates.

Improved Academics

Our research confirms improving test scores by 3-5% when using a stand-up desk are directly tied to increased engagement, healthier weight, & improved self-esteem. The benefits of standing desks branch into all aspects of life.

Increased Engagement

Why does a Stand-Up desk lead to 7-9 more minutes per hour increase in engagement? Standing empowers the student, leads to eye to eye contact with the teacher & reduces requests to leave the room simply to be able to move & stretch their legs.
