Standing While Learning

My Students

My students are fifth graders. I have 29 of them. I teach in a Title I school. Many of my students receive free or reduced-cost lunch. All of my students come from different backgrounds. I have students who range in all levels of academic abilities. These include students who have an IEP, are gifted, ELL, and are on grade level. One thing my students have in common is how hard they work and their desire to learn and succeed.

My students are hard workers and are determined to do their best at all times.

Some of my students struggle with attention and the ability to sustain focus for long periods of time. I want to allow them the opportunity to move while they learn during instruction. In 5th grade instruction often includes period of time with one activity that would allow the ability to break up time while keeping the body moving and oxygen flowing.

My Project

Using a standing desk allows students to get their wiggles out while still having the ability to learn. Students need time to move.

Sitting for long periods of time is a challenge for most students.

Students tend to lose their ability to sustain focus and attention without opportunities for movement during instruction time. This can lead to a loss of important information.

A standing desk provides this opportunity and also allows students to move with out being a distraction to others while learning. Moving get the blood and oxygen moving throughout their bodies and allows students to stay focus and on task.
