Standing Up for Success: Flexible Seating for Focused Learning

My Project

I teach two energetic groups of 6th and 7th grade students in a diverse public middle school in Brooklyn, NY. My students are bright, curious, and full of energy—often too much for traditional desks and chairs. Some thrive when they can move a little while working. Others find it hard to stay focused when confined to a seat for long periods. I want to provide a learning environment that supports both movement and academic success.

I am requesting two standing desks to offer flexible seating options in my classroom.

These desks will provide students who need to stand, stretch, or move slightly while working with a way to stay focused and productive without disrupting others. Students will be able to rotate using the desks during independent and group work time.

Research shows that standing desks can improve behavior, concentration, and even academic performance. These desks will especially benefit students with attention challenges, anxiety, or sensory needs. Having just two desks will allow us to start small and build a rotation system so all students can benefit.

These standing desks will help students take ownership of their learning and their bodies. Instead of being told to “sit still,” students can choose what helps them learn best. That freedom empowers students to feel respected and supported, both emotionally and academically.
