My students need 6 adjustable stand-up desks so they can stand up at their desks.
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Heins's classroom raised $2,003

My Students
I have active 3rd graders (8&9 year olds) who are expected to sit for long periods of time. On a normal day, they are expected to sit from 8:30-12, getting up just to transition to another part of the room. I do some active songs and some brain breaks with them but it is still a lot of sitting.
I have a wide range of students.
Though they are a small group, at only 19, they are very diverse. Many of the students at our school are first generation Americans with parents who don't speak English. Many of them are not fluent yet, either. We have at least 8 different cultures represented in my classroom alone! I have 2 kids on individualized learning plans (IEPs) due to learning problems. I also have some ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) kids. We are a high poverty school with 65% qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
My Project
I am requesting 6 adjustable stand up desks. With these desks, students could choose whether to sit or stand. The desks also have a swinging foot rest which provides for movement. I believe these desks would help some of my students to focus more on their class work and thus improve their grades.
I envision many students choosing to stand at least part of the time.
Some of them already do. They just have to bend down pretty far to write! The footrest is said to correct body position while providing lower back stress relief. Standing also burns more calories which would help with the obesity epidemic!
We actually read about these desks in Scholastic News, which is a news magazine for kids. The kids thought they'd be cool. They are my motivation for applying to Donor's Chose.
