Standing for Structure

Help me give my students alternate seating and work space. A Bistro style table will provide students with a standing work space. Standing will help some of the students that have trouble sitting for the entire 90 minutes.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is a young Missouri charter school. Our building was added to the small district about 4 years ago. We serve about 368 students grades 9-12 in our building. We have a high English as a Second Language population. The majority of our student are Somoli refugees. The remainder of our student population is Hispanic and a small percentage other (Caucasian, Asian, African-American, etc.) Most of our students are low income families and our school provides them with free or reduced lunch. We provide STEM opportunities and work toward college and career readiness. All of my students are English Language Learners.

My Project

A standing workspace option will provide students with a choice in the classroom. Our class periods are 90 minutes long. It is nice for students to have a variety of workspace choices. The choices will allow for autonomy and self-directed learning. It is important for students to become self-aware and make good choices to enhance their own learning. Students enjoy having choices in their seating. The carpet will allow a differentiated area for working on the floor. Sometimes students like laying down while they work. The Bistro tables and the carpet, will create a more conducive learning environment.
